CHAPTER EIGHT

“Hello, you must be Macy. I’m Carla Ratner, the owner of The Food Bank.” The pantsuited executive extended a well-manicured hand to Macy and she shook it, noting the blood-red nails that were filed to points. Like daggers.

“I am. Nice to meet you,” Macy replied, wondering yet again about the wisdom of her decision to come check this woman out as a potential suspect in Iva’s murder.

“Likewise. Go ahead and have a seat and you can tell me all about your event,” Carla directed, nodding at a chair in front of her ultra-modern stainless-steel desk. Macy glanced skeptically at the acrylic chair, hoping that it would support her weight, and sat gingerly.

Once they got through all of the details that Macy fabricated on the spot, based upon the all too poignant reality of her own wedding, Carla asked her to select from one of five menu options. Macy made a selection that she thought that her late beloved Jake would like and waited for Carla to draw up the quote.

“It’s very unusual to not have both the bride and groom at these appointments,” Carla said, looking up from the quote sheet that she hadn’t shared with Macy yet.

“Oh, well…Jake couldn’t make it, but he trusts me,” Macy replied, a lump rising in her throat.

“I see.” Carla looked at her closely but didn’t press the issue. She slid the quote over in front of Macy. “Well, here is the cost for the items that you selected for dinner, plus set-up and tear-down, with snack trays prior to the wedding ceremony. Everything is itemized, so if you show this to Jake and he’d prefer something else, just let me know as quickly as you can. Did you want to put this on a credit card today?” she asked, peering at Macy over the top of her designer reading glasses.

“Oh…uh…I…we’re just getting estimates right now, so that we can compare quotes and services and things like that.”

“I see. Smart. I like that.” Carla nodded her approval, taking off her glasses and polishing them. “Since we’ve had a good conversation, I’m going to tell you something that I’d like to stay just between us.”

“Okay, sure,” Macy replied, her heart rate ticking upward.

“There’s a caterer here in town that you should avoid when you’re getting your estimates. I wouldn’t normally say anything, but you’re really nice, so I feel like I should warn you. Their business practices are less than ethical, I can attest personally to that, and while I can’t verify it, I’ve heard complaints about food-borne illnesses. Now, if I’m asked about it, I’ll swear I never said a word, but I just wanted you to be aware.”

“Oh wow, I appreciate the warning…who is it?” Macy asked.

“Catering Classique,” Carla replied in a low voice. “I know the owner, and let’s just say that she doesn’t exactly handle things in a professional manner.”

“Oh really? That’s so weird – they have a good reputation online from what I could see.”

“Dig a little deeper. Look for people who used them and gave reviews.
